Datalab uses a price-per-page billing system that provides flexibility and transparency for your document processing needs. This page explains how our billing works, what’s included in a plan, and how to manage your usage.

Per-Page-Pricing

Every API request consumes credits based on the number of pages processed. Please note:
  • All charges are rounded up to the nearest cent.
  • Our latest pricing is on our pricing page

Free Credits for New Accounts

New accounts may receive $5 in free credits upon credit card verification. These credits:
  • Are used to trial our API before subscribing to a paid plan.
  • Are automatically deducated as you use the API.
  • Expire upon subscribing to a paid plan.
Once your credit balance reaches 0, requests to our API will return HTTP 403 errors and you will need to subscribe to a paid plan. We require verification for free credits to prevent abuse and fraud. Verified credit cards do not get charged unless you opt into a paid subscription with them.

Billing Frequency

Every month, you pay a fixed fee. The fixed fee functions like credits, and will be used until the balance is zero. After that, the API will be pay as you go and you will be charged for overage. If you would like to adjust the number of times you are billed for overage each month, please contact support and we’ll increase your threshold.

Payment Failures and Grace Periods

When payment failures occur, you will receive an email notification from Stripe.
  • On payment failure, you subscription enters an unpaid state.
  • We provide a 24-hour grace period with a usage cap to give you time to resolve payment issues.
  • After the grace period, API access will be blocked until payment is resolved.
If you need to resolve a payment issue, please update your payment method in the dashboard or contact support. We configure special grace periods on a one-off basis for customers with high API spend and Enterprise customers.

Understanding Your Usage

What Counts as a Page?

  • PDF Files: Each page in a PDF document
  • Images: Each image file counts as one page
  • Office Documents: Each page in a document
  • Multi-page TIFFs: Each frame counts as a separate page
  • Spreadsheets: Pricing varies by extraction mode:
    • Simple mode: 2,500 cells per page, capped at 100 pages ($0.60) per sheet
    • Advanced mode: 500 cells per page, no cap
    • For files with multiple sheets, each sheet is calculated separately and then summed
